Last Updated Nov 06, 2009

An upcoming lecture at Eureka College will examine Christian beliefs about games of chance and the practices of speculation. The E. Royal F. Humbert Lecture on Religion and Culture will take place the evening of Oct. 20 and be delivered by Kathryn Tanner, a professor at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Her topic will be “Grace and Gambling: A Theological Critique of Financial Speculation.”

Tanner was awarded a master’s and doctoral degrees at Yale University. She is author of the books “Economy of Grace,” “God and Creation in Christian Theology,” “The Politics of God,” and “Theories of Culture: A New Agenda for Theology.” The Humbert Lecture, established in 1975 in recognition of teacher Royal Humbert, seeks to provide a forum for dealing critically and constructively with relevant issues in the area of religion and culture.
