Congregations Should Take Positive Steps To Prepare For Possible Viral Outbreak

Three Disciples leaders have jointly issued a statement that gives information on the best ways to prevent and prepare for a possible outbreak of the H1N1 virus, popularly known as “The Swine Flu.” The letter was issued recently, at the onset of flu season, as concerns have been raised by congregations about ways to prevent, treat, and mobilize for pastoral needs, should an outbreak occur.

The letter is signed by General Minister and President Sharon Watkins, Executive Director of Week of Compassion Amy Gopp, and Dr. Donald T. Lucey, former first vice moderator. “In the case of the H1N1 virus healing involves countering sensationalist reports, presenting accurate information on prevention and finding ways to prepare for the possibility of an outbreak,” the letter states. Suggestions include helping to minimize infection by placing liquid hand sanitizer in fellowship halls, church kitchens and other gathering spots.
