At the Christmount Board of Directors meeting on November 11, 2008, a new outreach emphasis was announced for Disciples coming to Christmount. According to Rev. Jamie Brame, Church Relations Director, campers and conferees will be encouraged to bring parts of the International Medical Assistance (IMA) medicine boxes. During youth events, there will be time to put together these kits, which will be dedicated then shipped to Week of Compassion's partner agency, IMA World Health for distribution.
During the Program Committee meeting on Monday, November 10, Brame announced his intention of making this a part of all youth events at Christmount beginning in January, 2009, with the Winterfest Skiing and Snowboarding Retreats. As the Committee discussed this with enthusiastic approval, they added the suggestion that all Disciples coming to Christmount, either for a Christmount event or a church retreat, should be encouraged either to bring the parts of the kits for assembling, or bring food for the local ecumenical crisis ministry in Black Mountain, Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry.
Rev. Hope Hodnett of Nashville, TN, Chair of the Program Committee, endorsed this even more strongly by announcing that her youth from Vine Street Christian Church, who make an annual retreat to Christmount each winter, would be among the first to participate in this program. The Christmount Board added its vote of support by encouraging each other to be part of this new initiative as part of each Board meeting.
Christmount is the camp and conference center for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), located in Black Mountain, NC.
