Thursday Night Minister at Assembly Speaks of Repentance

Last Updated Aug 01, 2009

Repentance centered and transformed the second worship service of the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Indianapolis, Ind. on Thursday evening, July 30.

Doug SkinnerDouglas B. Skinner, senior minister, Northway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), in Dallas, Texas, spoke about “God’s gracious provision” for forgiveness.  With its origin in the story of the Garden and the fall from grace, Dr. Skinner’s declaration was that the Church is at its best when it is asking for forgiveness.  Scripture for the evening was Genesis 3.

Referencing the lore of Calvary and the cross of Christ being positioned above the bones of Adam, Skinner said redemption had its symbolic “Genesis” at the time of the Crucifixion.

“Every choice is in response to the choice that has come before,” Skinner said.  “To hide, excuse, evade or blame is to deny the opportunity and responsibility the Church has to heal a fragmented world.”

“God is asking, ‘Where are you?’ today,” Skinner explained.  “We must be honest with each other and honest with our God, who gives us grace and courage.

“Believe the good news:  In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.”

Following his sermon, worshippers were invited to visit prayer stations and light candles, while General Assembly musicians, under the direction of William Thomas, performed.
