What Does The Church and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Have In Common? Their ‘Spirit Touches All Who Enter’ Former Speedway President Tells DMF Contributors

Last Updated Jul 31, 2009

DMF DinnerCongregations’ contributions to Disciples Mission Fund “are the financial way of reaching wholeness in the Church,” Sharon Watkins, Disciples general minister and president told major contributors at a thank you luncheon during the 2009 General Assembly.  “Your contributions to DMF provide the financial unity of the polar star.  Think of DMF as your Church’s family budget.”

Associate General Manager and Vice President Todd Adams reported 72 Disciples-related institutions had received DMF funds.

The Church received $13.9 million from congregations in 2008.  About 52 percent is provided to the regional ministry, 10 percent goes to higher education and 38 percent is devoted to related-organizations and operating expenses.

There are parallels between the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the life of the Disciples said Joie Chitwood, the outgoing president of the Speedway.  “There is a passion for the Motor Speedway that carries on through the generations.  We have families that pass on the love of racing from one to the next.

“Tony Hulman (the founder off the Speedway) said he was once asked what makes the Speedway special and he said, “its spirit touches all who enter!”

He also said the Speedway has many traditions that have existed for decades and “it is sometimes difficult to cause change” which brought a round of chuckles.

Adams said the life of the Church depends on the continued support of DMF.
