General Assembly Resolutions

(OPERATIONAL BUSINESS ITEM)
A CALL FOR FUNDING OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY PROCESSES OF DISCERNMENT
WHEREAS, in 1996, former General Minister and President, Dr. Richard L. Hamm, described the "process of discernment" as a "communal process by which the church seeks the guidance of the Holy Spirit to identify, understand and respond faithfully to the word and will of God" on difficult issues; and
WHEREAS, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has engaged and continues to engage in various processes of discernment to faithfully respond to the word and will of God and to facilitate our church-wide transformational commitment; and
WHEREAS, past and ongoing discernment processes have been consistently under funded;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) meeting in Fort Worth, Texas, in July 2007 directs the General Board to adequately fund future discernment processes including staffing and support according to the authority granted to it by The Design for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); and
FINALLY, BE IT RESOLVED that the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) meeting in Fort Worth, Texas, in July 2007 declares that adequate funding for processes of discernment along with other initiatives which have been accepted by the General Assembly is a very high priority in the full ministry of the church.
