Resource Group on Peace: Few Topics Are More Important
July 23, 2007 - Disciples News Service - Fort Worth, Texas

As a member of the executive committee of the Disciples Peace Fellowship, Craig Watts had a lot to say about peace.  Watts spoke at a Monday resource group during the 2007 General Assembly on the topic: “What the Bible Says About Peace.”

Watts, a Disciples pastor of Royal Palm Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Coral Spring, Fla., began with the explanation that peace is a critical subject all the time, not just during war, although these are the times we seem to think of it most. Participants had a number of opportunities to ask questions and look at cartoons that were handed out during the lecture.

Watts told the group that “few topics are more important than peace” and through numerous scriptures gave examples of how Jesus reacted to a lack of peace in the world. The resource group was designed to look at what the Bible says on the subject of peace and allow participants an opportunity to reflect on why peace matters to the faith community.

“We are called to emulate faithfulness, not violence” Watts said, “We are to live as followers of Jesus Christ.”

Because of the number of questions, the 90-minute session time seemed to end quickly, and several people continued their discussion with Watts at the Disciples Peace Fellowship booth in the Exhibit Hall.
