INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- A former vice moderator of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has been recognized for children's advocacy by the National Child Labor Committee.
Saundra Bryant, Los Angeles, received the 1999 Lewis Hine Award during special ceremonies in New York, Jan. 28. She is one of 10 persons from across the U.S. to receive the annual award. Saundra was first vice moderator of the Disciples General Assembly from 1995-1997.
Bryant was honored for her service as executive director of All Peoples Christian Center. As a child, the Los Angeles native spent her playtime at the center. She returned to her home city after graduate school to head All Peoples; one of four mission centers related to the Homeland Ministries division of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Under Bryant's leadership All Peoples has become a full-service organization that provides case management and health services, tutorial services, computer training, leadership development and other programs to 5,000 L.A. residents.
The center also is the lead agency for L.A. Bridges. The after-school and multicultural gang prevention program brings together nonprofit organizations, schools, churches, police, parents and teachers to serve at-risk children.
The Lewis Hine awards, established in 1985, are named in memory of a sociologist and photographer whose work in the 1900s led to enactment of the nation's first laws regarding child labor.
