CINCINNATI (DNS) -- A Hannibal, Mo., resident was elected, Oct. 10, as second vice moderator of the General Assembly of the Indianapolis-based Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Minnie Smith received an enthusiastic endorsement from the Disciples' chief decision-body, meeting here through Oct. 12. As second vice moderator, she will help preside over meetings of the General Assembly and General Board. She will hold office until the close of the 2001 gathering in Kansas City.

Smith is a claims representative with the Social Security Administration in Hannibal. She is a 34-year employee of the SSA. An active laywoman, she is a member of Willow Street Christian Church.

She is currently a member of the Disciples General Board and recently finished a term on its Administrative Committee. She also just began a three-year term as member of the governing body of Board of Church Extension, the Disciples' church planning and financing unit.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in the early 1800s. The denomination has nearly 900,000 members in more than 3,800 congregations in the United States and Canada. Those churches are concentrated mainly in the Midwest and in Texas.
