CINCINNATI (DNS) -- A Nashville, Tenn., minister was elected, Oct. 10, as first vice moderator of the General Assembly of the Indianapolis-based Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The Rev. Lanny Lawler received an enthusiastic endorsement from the Disciples' chief decision-body, meeting here through Oct. 12. As first vice moderator, he will help preside over meetings of the General Assembly and General Board. He will hold office until the close of the 2001 gathering in Kansas City.

Lawler has been senior minister of Eastwood Christian Church, Nashville, for six years. He also has held pastorates in Connecticut, Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky and has served on church-related commissions and committees in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tennessee, Greater Kansas City, Indiana and Mid-America.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in the early 1800s. The denomination has nearly 900,000 members in more than 3,800 congregations in the United States and Canada. Those churches are concentrated mainly in the Midwest and in Texas.
