INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- An instructor of preaching from Austin, Texas, has been called as the next national pastor for Hispanic Ministries in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

The Rev. Pablo A. Jimenez was unanimously elected to the post by the Pastoral Commission for Hispanic Ministries. He begins in January. Jimenez currently is an instructor of homiletics at Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin.

Jimenez succeeds retired National Pastor Lucas Torres, who will continue through December providing part-time administrative and pastoral support.

A native of New York City, raised in Puerto Rico and St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Jimenez was director of the Disciples of Christ Biblical Institute and taught at the Evangelical Seminary in Puerto Rico, Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Lombard, Ill., and Austin (Texas) Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The longtime educator also was a Division of Overseas Ministries appointee to the Latin American Biblical Seminary, San Jose, Costa Rica.

Before joining the faculty at Episcopal Seminary, Jimenez was executive director of the Association for Hispanic Theological Education, Atlanta, Ga., for five years.

The new national pastor has a master of divinity degree from the Evangelical Seminary in Puerto Rico, a master of sacred theology from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, and a doctor of ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Ga. He currently is completing coursework for a doctor of philosophy from the Evangelical Institute of Graduate Theological Studies in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
