INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- The Rev. David Grandgeorge, Berea, Ky., has been called asGrandg.gif (21297 bytes) associate minister for Kentucky Appalachian Ministries. He has served for 12 years as pastor of First Christian Church in Berea.

The new KAM minister begins the assignment Jan. 1, 2000, following the retirement of the Rev. Bennett Poage who currently holds the post. Grandgeorge hopes to build upon the ministry Poage has provided in the Appalachian region.

"I envision developing, with the congregations, new models for cooperative ministry in the region," he said. "The real strength of the congregations in the KAM area are the people who participate in their church."

Grandgeorge grew up in Stuttgart, Ark., where he was active in a Disciples congregation, and in church camp, district and regional assemblies. He has a farming background and earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from Arkansas State University. He also has a master of divinity degree from Lexington (Ky.) Theological Seminary.

Grandgeorge has chaired the regional Human Concerns Committee and served as a camp counselor and director. He also was a member of the KAM program committee and served on the governing board of Christian Church Homes of Kentucky. He also has been active with the Kentucky Council of Churches and other community service organizations.

David and Rebecca Grandgeorge have two children, William Russell and Catherine Ellen.

Kentucky Appalachian Ministries focuses on meeting the social, economic, educational and spiritual needs of people in the area. KAM is a cooperative mission of Homeland Ministries and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kentucky. It also is one of four North American home mission and ministry centers supported by Homeland Ministries.
