INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- Memorial services were held May 13 for the Rev. George Curtis Jones Sr., 87, Jacksonville, Fla.
The retired Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) minister died May 10 in Jacksonville.
Survivors include his spouse, Sybil Jones, Jacksonville, and sons: G. Curtis Jones Jr., Angel Fire, N.M.; Robert D.S. Jones, Ideal, Ga.; David L.F. Jones, Hazelton, British Columbia; and the Rev. Paul H. Jones, Lexington, Ky.
G. Curtis (Curt) Jones, Jr., is a former president of the Disciples Division of Higher Education in St. Louis and Phillips University, Enid, Okla. The Rev. Paul H. Jones is dean of the chapel at Transylvania University, Lexington.
A Virginia native, G. Curtis Jones Sr. earned a bachelor's degree from Lynchburg (Va.) College in 1933. He earned a master of divinity in 1936 from Yale University Divinity School, New Haven, Conn. He later received an honorary doctorate from Lynchburg College.
The longtime Disciples pastor served congregations in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa and Georgia. During retirement he served 10 interim pastorates, which included ministries at Park Avenue Christian Church, New York City, and Ashland (Va.) Christian Church.
In 1982, Jones was one of 12 Disciples recognized by National City Christian Church, Washington, D.C., for distinguished service. He was inducted into National City's Pillar of Faith for his contributions as a pastor and author.
Jones wrote 21 books and articles in numerous magazines and journals. His last book, 500 Illustrations: Stories from Life for Preaching and Teaching, co-written with son Paul H. Jones, was published in March 1998.
