INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- A new regional minister has been called by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Alabama-Northwest Florida. The Rev. John P. Mobley, senior minister of First Christian Church, Shelbyville, Tenn., will begin his new duties March 1, 1996. His call was approved by the Dec. 9 meeting of the regional board. Mobley, 38, has served the Shelbyville congregation since 1991. Ordained a Southern Baptist minister in 1978, Mobley was granted standing as a Disciples pastor in 1984. He served as minister of the Simpsonville (Ky.) Christian Church from 1985 -1991. "Our search committee and the regional board felt John was the candidate that best met the profile that our listening conferences identified as needed to face the needs of the Christian Church in Alabama-Northwest Florida for the next 15-20 years," said the Rev. George Wagner, Madison, Ala. Wagner chaired the regional search committee. "The committee and board was impressed with his openness, candor and ability to deal with the comprehensive ministry of the regional church." Mobley is currently a member of the regional board of the Christian Church in Tennessee and has served on the regional executive and personnel committees and chaired the Commission on Congregational Vitality. He has also been active in church-related community organizations, including Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. He is the developer and coordinator of the volunteer chaplain program of Bedford County General Hospital, and currently serves as president of the Bedford County Ministerial Association. The newly called regional minister received his bachelor's degree from Furman University, Greenville, S.C. He received his master of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, and has done post-graduate work at the seminary. Mobley and his wife, Valya, have two children, Tyler, 8, and Janessa, 5. He succeeds the Rev. Carl R. Flock who retired in July after 17 years as regional minister. The Rev. G. Bronson Netterville has served as interim regional minister.
