CFC honors Hispanic congregations for BMF giving

KISSIMMEE, Fla., July 19, 2002 -- Disciples Church Finance Council honored ten Hispanic congregations earlier this month for their contributions to the church's common mission fund. Hispanic BMF giving is up, says the church's top finance officer.

With contributions to Basic Mission Finance in excess of $12,000 in 2001, La Hermosa Christian Church of New York City was honored by Lois Artis, president of CFC, as the top BMF giving congregation among Hispanics. She honored ten congregations during the biennial meeting of the National Hispanic and Bilingual Assembly in Kissimmee July 11-14. More than $6,000 of La Hermosa Christian's BMF giving was designated.

Artis said Disciples Hispanics giving to regular and designated BMF funds totaled $73,308 in 2001, a 67 percent increase over their 2000 BMF gifts of $46,903. She said the top ten Hispanic congregations in BMF giving provided $45,036 in 2001. This year to date, overall Hispanic giving to BMF is up 44 percent over giving the same time last year with receipts of $30,762.

Artis credits the sharp gains in BMF giving among Hispanics to the closer relationship CFC has developed with Hispanic congregations, the leadership of National Hispanic Pastor Pablo Jiménez, and stewardship workshops CFC Director of Stewardship Wanda Alejandro-Gonzalez has conducted in Hispanic congregations across North America.

Also honored in Kissimmee for their 2001 BMF giving were: Iglesia Cristiana Discipulos of Kissimmee, Iglesia Cristiana Hispana Chickasaw Orlando (Fla.), Iglesia Cristiana Sinai of Brooklyn, N.Y., Primera Iglesia De Miami (Fla.), Mision Cristiana Corona Queens (N.Y.), Iglesia Del Pueblo of Hammond, Ind., Iglesia Cristiana Ebenezer of Tucson, Ariz., Iglesia Cristiana of Houston, Texas, and Iglesia Aposento Alto of Forest Park, Ga.
