EDITORIAL DIRECTOR CHOSEN FOR CBP ST. LOUIS (November 15, 2004) -- Christian Board of Publication president and publisher Cyrus N. White today named Trent C. Butler as vice-president and editorial director for this growing Christian publishing ministry. Butler will direct the development of books, seminary textbooks, curriculum and congregational resources published under the Chalice Press and other imprints for people in congregational and academic communities within and beyond the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). "Dr. Butler brings an unusual depth of experience and success in effective publishing for congregations and seminaries," said White. "Trent's accomplishments as an editor, educator, scholar, and ordained minister combine to provide us with exceptional leadership in this position. Jane McAvoy first brought Trent in as our Senior Editor because she saw in him the qualities that have become apparent to all of us at CBP. After an extended time of prayerful discernment and consideration of more than thirty applicants, it became clear that Trent has the combination of skills and vision I want leading the development of new resources for the exciting church we see emerging. We want to publish things that matter - that strengthen the ministries of congregations and help people deepen their Christian discipleship." Butler succeeds Jane McAvoy as Editorial Director, following her untimely death last June. Prior to joining CBP, Butler served as editorial director for the Bible, academic, and reference book division of Broadman and Holman Publishers. In that role, he served as General Editor and contributor for such major publications as the Holman Bible Dictionary, the Holman Bible Atlas, and a variety of Bible editions and Bible commentaries. Prior to his twenty-two years in publishing, Butler was ordained as a congregational pastor and served on three university faculties, including ten years as Associate Professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Ruschlikon, Switzerland. Fluent in Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and modern German, Butler is widely published in Biblical studies journals and commentaries. A native of Texas, Butler earned his PhD in Biblical studies and linguistics from Vanderbilt University. "This is an exciting opportunity to continue serving God's church," Butler stated. "We are uniquely positioned to partner with the church and the academy to equip ministers and disciples for the dramatic new era God has in store for the church. We will work with creative authors and congregational leaders to provide effective new resources for the emerging church." Christian Board of Publication exists to offer learning resources that support congregational ministries to bring unbelievers to awareness, seekers to belief, and believers to deeper faith and commitment to God through Jesus Christ. Through its Chalice Press and other imprints, CBP publishes a variety of resources for pastors, seminarians, and the general reader. CBP is a general ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
