NBA Board
of Trustees appoints new seven-member group to serve in place
of local service unit boards
The National
Benevolent Association, the Disciples social and health services
division, continues a Corporate-wide restructure which includes
the development of a new business plan and the centralization
of a variety of functions. In an effort to create a more efficient,
accountable operation to better serve residents and clients, the
NBA Board of Trustees suspended local board representation at
NBA Service Units and appointed a new, seven-member group to serve
as the board for each of those units, effective Sept. 30.
The new board
is comprised of executives from NBA's management team and from
the NBA Board of Trustees who bring a wealth of knowledge and
insight into the operations of local facilities. Several of the
executives have served successfully on the boards of more than
30 NBA units - in some cases, for more than two years.
From a practical
and legal standpoint, this decision prospectively relieves those
who served on local boards of fiduciary responsibilities and liabilities
related to board service at their respective NBA units.
From a ministry
standpoint, nothing changes.
Rev. David
C. Mindel, NBA Board Chair, hopes that people who served NBA as
board members, and gave so much to further the NBA mission in
their communities, will agree to continue serving people through
participation on local unit advisory councils. In that role, he
said, they can continue to:
- Offer
advice, assistance and expertise to their local NBA unit CEO
and staff;
- Serve as
friends and advocates for residents of their local NBA unit
and their family members;
- Represent
their local NBA unit as ambassadors in their community;
- Assist
their local NBA unit CEO and staff in fundraising and outreach
activities; and
- Remain
involved and committed to the mission and ministry of their
local NBA unit.
Members of
the NBA Board of Trustees serving on the new board (and their
experience as board members) are:
- Reverend
Mindel (member of the board at NBA Disciples Village, Odessa,
Texas);
- D.G. "Sonny"
Fountain (former member of the board at NBA Southern Christian
Services, Jackson, Miss.);
- Susan
Pamerleau (member of the board at NBA Patriot Heights in San
Antonio);
- Mindy
Lewis, Columbus, Ind.
Management
staff members serving on the new board (and their experience as
board members) are:
- Cindy
Dougherty, NBA President (member of the board at NBA Christian
Services for Children in Alabama);
- Mike Spencer,
Senior Vice President for Operations;
- Bob Cleeland,
Vice President for Development (member of the board at NBA Tennyson
Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home).
NBA itself
is taking a similar approach with the formation of the National
Benevolent Foundation Advisory Council, which meets for the first
time Oct. 13-14 in St. Louis. Members of this body will represent
NBA in much the same manner as local advisory councils.
