GENERAL ASSEMBLY MARCH AGAINST VIOLENCE James Demus was asked to comment on the justice march held during the General Assembly. He made the following statement concerning its impact: The October 10, 1999, March Against Violence was one of the best events that I have ever been involved in at a General Assembly. It demonstrated that the church I love and am a part of is in touch with and is willing to take action on the social justice issues that are impacting our country and our world every day. When we planned the march, it was with the understanding that if 500 people participated we would consider it successful. You can imagine our joy when over 2000 people marched out of the Convention Center to the steps of City Hall to voice our outrage over the epidemic of violence that is now taking over our land. From the prayer by our General Minster and President, Dr. Richard Hamm, to the keynote address by Dr. Bill Nichols, the march articulated that we, Disciples of Christ, are taking seriously the charge of the scripture to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God. For persons who are willing to participate further in addressing social justices issues as a church, I encourage you to join (DJAN), the Disciples Justice Action Network today. |
