JARVIS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE NEWS, SPRING, 1999 

BEGINNING BEEP PROGRAM: The Black Executive Exchange program, sponsored by the National Urban League of New York, officially began February 25, 1999, with Mr. Clifton Boone, Director of Financial Research, STANDARD AND POOR'S, Englewood, Colorado, serving as BEEP PROFESSOR. The Black Executive Exchange Program is a voluntary effort on the part of industry and government agencies to loan key African-American professionals to participating colleges where they lecture in credit-bearing courses.

REV. ALONZO SMITH HONORED: Jarvis Christian College honored Rev. Alonzo Smith Saturday, February 27, 1999, with a luncheon and program. Reverend Smith, the youngest son of king Solomon Smith (an ex-slave) and Amanda Smith, was born in Hunt County. Reverend Smith was a classmate of former President Ronald Reagan. He received a Certificate from Jarvis Christian College in 1930 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Eureka College in 1932. Reverend Smith was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He pastored six different churches in Texas and owned two dry goods stores in Jefferson, Texas. He was inducted into the First Pioneer Hall of Fame at Jarvis Christian College in 1994.

ANNUAL COLLEGE FOUNDERS' HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES: Two J.N. Ervin Lectures were given on March 25, 1999 by the Reverend Dr. Irving Allen, Sr. (Class of 1965). The Annual Alumni Awards Banquet was held on Saturday, March 27, 1999, in which four Distinguished Alumni were recognized. Those honored were: Mrs. Maud Hay, Mr. Willie Frank Hinchen, Mr. Percy Howard, Jr. and Mrs. Zelma Brooks. Mr. William "Buddy" Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Administration for Greenville Independent School District, was the Banquet speaker. The Sunday Morning Worship Service was the culminating activity. It was led by the Reverend Dr. Milton Curry, Chicago, IL. Dr. Curry is President and CEO of Chicago Youth and Community.

LILLY ENDOWMENT/UNCF HBCU PROGRAM AWARDS $1 MILLION: On March 24, 1999, Jarvis Christian College disclosed that they received a grant of $1 million from the Lilly Endowment-United Negro College Fund Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program. This award supports the development and expansion of a comprehensive Retention and Advancement Program at the College.
