Disciples youth and youth-group leaders can get a head start on this summer’s General Assembly with a new four-part curriculum program now available from Chalice Press.
The curriculum, “Putting It Together: Preparing for General Assembly and Figuring Out Where You Fit In,” was written by Lee Yates, a Disciples pastor who has been active in denomination-wide youth ministries for a decade, in cooperation with the Youth Planning Committee for General Assembly. Edited and produced by Chalice Pres, the curriculum is available for $3.99 from chalicepress.com as a printable PDF.
“Our church is filled with acronyms and job titles. At General Assembly youth can see the ministries beyond the names and what a difference we make in the world as Disciples,” Yates said. “This curriculum prepared our youth to hit the ground running in Orlando.”
Michelle Harris-Gloyer, the General Assembly Youth Coordinator, notes the practical, usable knowledge youth will gain by attending the biennial event.
"Attending the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) gives us a bigger picture of who we are as the Body of Christ. Giving youth the opportunity to attend the Assembly enlivens their spirits, empowers their knowledge of the church, engages them in mission, and affirms their voices as an important part of the church today."
Beyond short-term lessons, General Assembly is an opportunity for the church to acknowledge the crucial role youth play in our church’s future -- and how important they are now.
“Youth are not just the church of the future, but the church today," Yates said. "We believe they can lead our church. If we really believe this, it's time to show them how big of a church we are asking them to lead and introduce them to its many ministries,” Yates said. Now is the time to proclaim how much we accomplish together as Disciples and call our youth to claim their place in their Church.”
Even if youth don't plan to attend General Assembly, "Putting It Together" will be a useful resource for learning about the different ministries of the church, Disciples theology, and the community that stretches beyond local congregations.
The curriculum is divided into four sessions:
- Exploring Your Church
- Gathering As Church
- Assembling as Church
- We Are the Church
Each session includes an opening, learning opportunities for time together, a challenge or reflection to keep your youth thinking ahead, and a closing prayer.
"Putting It Together" is a downloadable PDF that can be printed as many times as needed. Leaders can view the lessons on tablets, e-readers, or computers while having access to printouts for activities included in the learning opportunities. The curriculum is available from Chalice Press only. Order:
