REPORT OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE – UPDATE ON
2009 GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTIONS

As part of the reorganization of the General Board and of the General Board living more fully into its responsibilities, seven committees have been established to do the work of the Board; Governance, Mission Finance, Audit, Counsel and Mediation, General Ministry Covenantal Dialogue, General Minister and President’s Vision Advisory and General Assembly.

The General Assembly Committee of the General Board has a two-fold responsibility. First – the General Assembly Committee replaced the former Time and Place Committee and thus will be bringing a separate business item to approve the location and date of the 2015 General Assembly.

The second responsibility is to follow up on approved or referred resolutions which contained actionable items from the previous General Assembly and report back to the current General Assembly.
Updates to the 2009 General Assembly resolutions include:

0915 Axis of Friendship
The General Assembly Committee is continuing to follow up with the submitters of the resolution to learn of what progress has been made in promoting September 12th of each year as an Axis of Friendship Day.

0916 Be a Global Mission Church
Since the 2009 General Assembly in Indianapolis:

  • 18 Congregations have become recognized as Global Mission Churches, bringing our denominational total to 33
  • 7 Regions have become recognized Global Mission Regions, bringing our total to 18
  • Global Ministries has developed a guide for local youth groups to become recognized as Global Mission Youth Groups
  • In conjunction with the Office of Disciples Women, Global Ministries has developed a guide for Disciples Women in Global Missions

0919 Christian Unity and War
The 2009 General Assembly in Indianapolis referred this resolution to the Council on Christian Unity to work with Disciples Peace Fellowship in further investigation. Robert Welsh, President of Council on Christian Unity will bring an update and presentation at the end of the formal presentation of our report.

0920 Renewing Disciples Support for Farm Worker Ministry
Since the 2009 General Assembly in Indianapolis, Disciples Farm Worker Ministry (DFWM) has become a membership-based organization affiliated with Disciples Home Missions (DHM). Members are encouraged to make donations to cover the costs of the organization’s ministry, with those funds being managed by DHM under the guidance of the DFWM leadership team. Members of DFWM regularly receive e-mail updates on farm-worker issues. DFWM has renewed Disciples’ relationship with the National Farm Worker Ministry (NFWM) by providing funding each year and sending a member of the DFWM leadership team to NFWM board meetings. 0922 Theological Foundations and Policies and Criteria for the Ordering of Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
A report covering the implementation of this document will be brought to the assembly by Ben Bohren, Chair of the General Commission on Ministry.

0923 Call for an Open Meeting Policy for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
At the 2010 General Board meeting, an Open Meeting Policy Taskforce was named to work on an Open Meeting Policy. The taskforce has met via conference call and will continue to pursue development of an Open Meeting Policy.


The General Board has reviewed Report No. 1128 from the General Assembly Committee. The report is submitted to the General Assembly for consideration and discussion. No action is required. (Discussion time 48 minutes)
